The idea of DT dates back to the beginning of the 21st century, but it wasn't until 2018 that the consultancy Gartner placed DT as one of the ten technological trends of that year and with high expectations of evolution (Figure 2). Around that year are the first publications on digital twins applied to the management of agricultural holdings (Verdouw and Kruize, 2017; Jo et al., 2018; Monteiro et al., 2018).
